Quantum computing firm Quantinuum has announced a major breakthrough in error correction, achieving a record 99.9995% logical fidelity that it says strengthens its path toward a commercially viable, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. The advance comes amid mounting concerns that increasingly powerful quantum machines could eventually undermine the cryptography protecting bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Quantinuum said Monday that its Helios quantum computer achieved a logical error rate of just five errors per million operations, a tenfold improvement over its previous record set in September. The company claims the result is also 100 times better than the best published result using competing quantum hardware architectures, previously reported by Google Quantum AI.
