Vitalik Buterin Reveals Why AI Could Push Bitcoin Miners Out

Bitcoin mining cost is split roughly evenly between hardware and electricity, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said on X. AI inference, by contrast, is almost entirely a hardware bill, he added. That contrast matters because miners and AI firms increasingly chase the same power sites. Yet the two industries spend their money in very different places. Buterin shared the observation alongside a cost table. Its line items add up to roughly $93,700 per coin. Electricity is the largest line. Power fed directly into the machines costs $40,600 per coin, or 43.3% of the total. Other electricity adds another $2,400. Meanwhile, compute capital expenditure (capex) runs about $37,600. That covers hardware, cooling, and power gear, including financing, and equals roughly 40% of the Bitcoin mining cost.
